Who Is Your Anchor?

28 April 2025 · Money-Wise Team

Storms do not only test roofs, they test foundations. Three truths for uncertain times, and one move to steady yourself.

There are seasons when life feels calm, and then there are seasons when everything seems to shake at once. Fuel prices rise. Plans change. The news feels heavy. Income stretches thinner. Peace becomes harder to protect. In moments like these, one question matters: what is anchoring you? Because storms do not only test roofs. They test foundations.

3 Truths

1. Storms reveal what calm seasons hide. When life is smooth, weak systems can look strong. Pressure exposes what was neglected: no emergency cushion, spending without intention, dependence on a single income stream, anxiety where preparation should have been. A storm does not create weakness. It often simply reveals it.

2. Panic is expensive. Fear makes people do costly things: buying emotionally, borrowing unnecessarily, ignoring wise decisions, chasing shortcuts, freezing when action is needed. Calm is not accidental. It is usually built through planning and wise habits long before pressure arrives.

3. Simplicity creates strength. When times tighten, clarity becomes wealth. Know what truly matters: food, rent, school fees, health, essential transport, peace of mind. Everything else should justify its place. Wise people simplify early. Struggling people simplify late.

2 Questions

  • If my income paused for 90 days, what would hold me up? Savings? Multiple income streams? Family support? Or just hope?
  • What am I currently funding that adds no real value? A habit, an image, convenience, impulse spending? Sometimes freedom is hidden inside one expense you no longer need.

1 Move

Take 15 minutes today and create an anchor list. Write two columns. Must Keep: food, rent, school fees, health, transport, core obligations. Can Cut or Reduce: non-essentials, waste, subscriptions, fuel-heavy habits, impulse spending. Then move one amount, however small, into savings this week. Even KSh 500 is a vote for stability.
